Hi, I’m Laurie~

Thank you for stopping by to find out more about Spinning Gold Productions.  I thought I’d take this opportunity to share with you who I was (nurtured), who I am (nature), and why I created Spinning Gold Productions for you.

I learned who I was supposed to be:

I am the first born of 3 girls.  And, believe it or not, birth order directly influences your personality and traits.  We tend to be more compliant, nurturing, caregivers, reliable, conscientious, cooperative, with a grin-and-bear it mentality (see The Effects of Birth Order on Personality for more information).  We “first-borns” are also given the most attention and therefore typically expected to “perform” with higher expectations.  I compliantly took on this role in my family, and became very, very good at it!

With no regard to who I was born to be, before the age of 3, I learned to be a “perfect, compliant, reliable, nurturing, conscientious” people-pleaser.

How this worked for me

I grew up in the country, where I was the only girl for miles around who was old enough to babysit, and since I had this perfectly reliable (see the list above) personality, I became a highly sought-after babysitter.  People would literally drive 15 miles one-way to pick me up to babysit their children.  Families would compete to be the first to “reserve” me for a Friday or Saturday night.  So, at age 9, I quickly learned that if I worked hard and performed well, people would like me and they would pay me.

Since age 9, I was never without a job where I received much praise, and I always had more than enough money, at that age, to buy whatever I wanted.  That’s all it took?  Work hard, be responsible and reliable, and make people happy, and I had it made!

So, that’s pretty much more story from age 3 until age 45.

I learned that my life would be good, i.e., I would be like and paid, as long as I continued to behave in this model.

What was Missing?

By age 45, I had been happily married to my best friend, Slawek Polinski, for 25 years.  We have two fantastic children, Chris (now 24) who we were training to be “perfect,” and Danielle (now 21).

We had a nice home in the suburbs of Chicago, and I always had great jobs and was paid relatively well for my role.

Here’s a picture of me in one of my corporate jobs, executive assistant to Senior VP of US Marketing, Brad Ball, at McDonald’s Corporation.  Who wouldn’t want this job?  So, why did I move from job to job, house to house, keep moving furniture around at home?  Why couldn’t I just be satisfied with this life?

Since I always had great positions in great companies, and still didn’t feel fulfilled, in 2002, I decided to go out on my own and become an entrepreneur.  I started my first business, Virtually Assisting You, Ltd.  Now I was able to create my own job, work only with people I choose to work with, and have complete creative control over the company, and what I did every day.  It really was a freeing and empowering experience.

I really am proud of Virtually Assisting You, I have had the great fortune and opportunity to be of service and support to hundreds of motivated entrepreneurs all over the country.  And the freedom to create your own service is awesome!

Yet, there remained a need to seek, a desire to fill a certain nagging voice in my heart that kept saying that there is more.

I felt like I was always searching for more.  But what else was there?
